The click is missing, though the citation remains at the scene.
This is the change that matters. Search does not need to erase publishers in order to weaken them. It can keep the article, name the article, summarize the article, and place the article in a small blue-linked afterlife at the edge of an answer box. The article is still structurally necessary. The visit is not.
Axios reported in March 2026 that Chartbeat data showed traditional search referrals had fallen by 60 percent over two years for small publishers, 47 percent for medium publishers, and 22 percent for large publishers. Chatbot referrals, meanwhile, had risen by more than 200 percent in a year and still accounted for less than 1 percent of publisher page-view referrals.
The ratio is the body on the floor. The replacement traffic exists mainly as a courtesy. It is growing rapidly from almost nowhere while the older flow is shrinking from somewhere that used to matter.
Pew Research Center then examined the scene from the other side of the page. When an AI summary appeared in Google results, users clicked a traditional result only 8 percent of the time. When no AI summary appeared, they clicked a traditional result 15 percent of the time. Users clicked a link inside the AI summary itself in only 1 percent of visits. They were also more likely to end their browsing session after seeing the summary than after seeing ordinary results.
That is the mechanism in plain view. The answer does not need to be perfect. It only needs to be sufficient to prevent departure.
Citation survives in this arrangement, but citation has been stripped of its former job. It used to move a reader from one place to another. Now it increasingly certifies that the machine ate from a real plate before serving the meal somewhere else.

The most important document in the file is not a newsroom complaint. It is a competition document.
In January 2026, the UK's Competition and Markets Authority said publishers have "no realistic option" but to allow their content to be crawled for Google's general search because of Google's market power. The same consultation provisionally proposed that publishers should be able to opt out of having that search content used to ground Google's search generative AI features and broader generative AI uses. The CMA later confirmed that more than 90 percent of UK searches take place on Google and explicitly placed AI Overviews and AI Mode inside Google's strategic market status designation.
This matters because it clarifies the political economy of the missing click. Publishers are not merely adjusting to a new product. They are being told to continue supplying the raw material for the dominant gateway while that gateway reorganizes itself into an answer engine. Refusal remains available in theory, in much the same way jumping overboard remains available on a moving ship.
Google's own language is unusually helpful here. The company says AI Overviews provide a quick snapshot that flows directly into AI Mode conversation, creating "one fluid experience" with links to continue exploring. The hierarchy is not hidden. The answer is primary. The outbound trip is supplementary. The web remains visible as continuation, not destination.
Cloudflare's broader crawl-to-click analysis supplies the ecosystem view. By mid-2025, the company said training accounted for nearly 80 percent of AI crawling activity and highlighted crawl-to-refer ratios in which AI platforms consume vastly more pages than they send back as human visits. Even without treating any one ratio as the universal number, the direction is unmistakable. Extraction is scaling faster than return.
Small publishers feel this first because they depend more directly on the old transfer. Large publishers at least possess some combination of brand power, apps, subscriptions, and habitual direct traffic. Smaller outlets have the citation and lose the arrival.

The old bargain of search was rough but legible. Publishers allowed themselves to be indexed. Search sent people through. The new bargain is more elegant and more dangerous. The publisher still performs the labor of reporting, writing, verifying, and hosting. The search system still needs the work and still signals that it came from somewhere respectable. What fades is the transfer that once made being found economically meaningful.
The click has not died from neglect. It has been redesigned out of the journey and retained as a decorative option.
